Simple Story

I was sitting in the dentist waiting room. With my AirPods dead and my eyes too tired to read or scroll, I just sat and prayed. A gentleman who I could tell was a driver, not a patient, shuttled a couple of guys to their appointments. On his return with another person for an appointment he sat near me and struck up a conversation about life including the rising cost of insurance and the struggle he is having to get good car insurance. (Something about my face says I am a good listener, go figure). While he was complaining  sharing his story, the Holy Spirit prompted me to apply what I learned last week at a discipleship conference: How to share a story of Jesus without being weird.

Vince Antonucci and Bart Rendel were the key note speakers and presented the information from personal experience and research on sharing your testimony in a conversational setting. A New Kind of Evangelism. So while the gentleman was sharing his worries and fears, I listened and then responded,

"I used to worry a lot about the rising costs of everything. It is so easy to stress when everything feels out of control. But one day, God asked me if I trust Him. I sing about trusting God, read my Bible about it, and yet, do I trust Him? It became a make or break moment for me. I decided I was going to trust God. This doesn't mean I stop doing the work or the research to save money, but I know He will help and lead me. My blood pressure sure went down, too. And God has always shown up for me."

The gentleman and I sat still for a minute. He simply replied, "Hmm." And gazed into the distance.

I then asked Holy Spirit for a leading question to change the subject and we kept talking until he was ready to leave. Conversational evangelism is a lot easier than I thought it would be. I plant the seeds, someone else waters, and God causes it to grow (see 1 Corinthians 3:6). Want more information on how to do this? How about you? What has Jesus done for you recently that you could share in an organic and non-threatening way? Begin with prayer, listen with care, share a story.
